Before our establishment in 2010, the East Midlands was divided into two networks — Trent Perinatal in the north and Central Newborn in the south — with no dedicated transport team. Transfers were carried out by medical and nursing staff from either Leicester Royal Infirmary or Queen’s Medical Centre NICUs, leaving their units to accompany babies on journeys.
Recognizing the need for a stand-alone service, healthcare professionals came together to form CenTre Neonatal Transport, uniting both networks and their expertise. Over the years, our service has grown and adapted, always striving to improve the way we deliver specialist neonatal transport. This milestone is a chance to reflect on the dedication of our teams, the support of our partner hospitals, and the trust of families who rely on us.

We have 2 acute day time teams (07:45hrs to 20:15hrs) and 1 acute night time team (19:45hrs to 08:15hrs) on duty every day. These teams are made up by an experienced neonatal transport nurse with either an advanced neonatal nurse practitioner (ANNP) or a medic.
We also have a nurse only team on duty every day (07:45hrs to 20:15hrs). This is an experienced neonatal transport nurse who will undertake repatriation transfers, outpatient appointments and investigations for babies deemed well enough not to need an ANNP or medic.
Our base is shared with the Comet Paediatric Transport Service and ACCOTS transport service at 10 Willow Road, Castle Donnington, Derby DE74 2NP.
We have 2 neonatal surgical centers in our area, one at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and one at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. In addition we undertake many transfers of newborn infants who require intervention for cardiac anomalies to the East Midlands Congenital Heart Center at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Kensington Building.
