Neonatal Transport

The birth of a new baby should be a happy event in any family’s life. When a baby is born too early or sick this is a frightening experience for everyone. CenTre Neonatal Transport Service appreciate that when you are told that your baby needs to be transferred to another hospital this will be a very stressful and worrying time for you and your family.

Our team of specialist trained doctors and nurses will introduce themselves to you and explain clearly what will happen to your baby before, during and after the transfer. They will give you an information leaflet that tells you about our service, or you can click here to download our parents information leaflet

There are many reasons why babies need to be moved to other hospitals. The most common reason is that the level of care the baby needs is not available at their local hospital so transfer to a specialist centre is necessary. This may be because :

  • they have an infection,
  • they may need an operation,
  • they may need specialist tests and investigations,
  • they may need to have intensive care if they have been born prematurely
  • they need to be transferred back to hospitals closer to home

It may be possible, in certain circumstances, for one person to travel with your baby in our ambulance. The team who will transfer your baby will be able to tell you more about this. If this is possible please be aware that we can only accommodate one very small piece of luggage due to storage restrictions in the ambulance.

What happens once I know my baby needs transferring?

As soon as the team looking after your baby decide to contact CenTre to arrange a transfer they should talk to you about their decision. They should give you information about the hospital your baby in going to. You can download an information sheet for the hospitals that your baby is going to be transferred to here
